WE ARE IN GREAT NEED OF SPORT ROCK CLIMBING SHOES, ALL SIZES, IN GOOD CONDITION, USED OR NEW.
IF YOU ARE A CLIMBER WHO LOVES AND UNDERSTANDS THE GREAT VALUE OF OUR VERTICAL WORLD THIS LETTER IS FOR YOU…
We at La Muralla Foundation run a Children's Social Inclusion Program in Montevideo, Uruguay, in South America. It is a Sport Rock Climbing Program “I’d Rather Be Climbing” where we work with children and teens who are at-risk, orphaned, abused, homeless and those with special needs such as Down Syndrome and emotional and physical challenges.
Our different programs have seen incredible success in changing the lives of children and teens who before had no reason to hope.
La Muralla, through the Sport of Rock Climbing, helps these children in need to see that it is in their power to work toward a future blessed with prosperity and happiness. They are shown that they are equal members of a special group of volunteer climbers and Mentor coaches, who are living lives of integrity and service and honor.
Our goal is inclusion and acceptance into a society where in many instances these children have been completely invisible and neglected.
They are shown that they are individuals who are to be respected and treated with dignity.
Through Sport Rock Climbing the young people are shown in a hands-on way the values needed for a great life...values such as loyalty, trust, honesty, self respect and pride in one's actions and accomplishments.
We have seen how instilling values such as self determination and focus and responsibility and compassion and perseverance can gently guide a child to create for themselves a bright future in which he actually has control of his own life.
ALL CLIMBERS UNDERSTAND THIS SO CLEARLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE SEEN HOW THESE VALUES HAVE SO GREATLY AND POSITIVELY EFFECTED
THEIR OWN LIVES OVER THE YEARS....
The La Muralla Foundation works with the state orphanage and other organizations whose goal is to save at risk children from destitution, poverty, delinquency and the dangers of life on the streets. The children in our program come from some of the absolute worst experiences that any child should ever have to endure. They have survived a diversity of horrors beyond the imagination of any person with a good heart, including years of daily sexual and physical abuse, abandonment, starvation, untreated injuries and disease, squalid and filthy living conditions or years of living in back allies and eating other people's garbage. Lives devoid of any love or compassion...until now...W
We are seeing in a big way how the benefits of our programs can profoundly change the course of the life of a child who before had no encouragement to dream.
THIS IS WHERE THE CLIMBERS OF THE WORLD CAN COME TOGETHER IN A HUGE BUT SIMPLE WAY TO HELP CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THE LIVES OF THESE CHILDREN IN NEED……
Our main goal is to change the life of a lost child through social inclusion.
Many of our children have been climbing for at least seven years now and have become quite skilled. Yet, climbing shoes being so expensive, we are not able to supply them to so many and they are forced to climb in their street shoes. This is a stark reminder to them, as they compare themselves to other climbers, that they are still not on the same level playing field within the sport and, most importantly, within society.
This is so unacceptable a situation because it is working to defeat our very purpose of inclusion and equality and pride.
WE KNOW THAT THERE IS PROBABLY A VERY NICE PAIR OF USED CLIMBING SHOES ON THE FLOOR OF THE CLOSET OF EVERY CLIMBER ON THE PLANET WHO MAY HAVE ALREADY MOVED ON TO A NEWER OR COOLER PAIR.
THOSE SHOES ARE LIKE GOLD TO US.
TO POSSESS SOMETHING SO PRECIOUS AND SO NEEDED IS ONLY A FAR OFF DREAM TO THESE CHILDREN.
We know that each climber realizes that this simple act of giving a pair of shoes will make a serious and incredible impact that goes far beyond the climbing shoes….
It’s about helping change a life….
THIS IS WHAT WE ASK OF YOU:
Please, take that precious pair of used climbing shoes and go to your nearest post office and put them in a box or shipping envelope and put our address on it and pay the shipping to send them to us so we can hand them over to a child whose eyes will light up and sparkle with disbelief and joy.
A joy they all so need and so deserve.

We currently are working with over 900 children and teens and are now forced to turn away children who need us because we pay for all supplies and equipment with our own limited funds. Our resources are stretched far beyond our financial limitations. Our hope is to expand our Climbing and Social Center and hire more Mentor Coaches so we can reach out to the thousands of children who need us. Much of our five programs and events are run by the incredible efforts of the climbers of La Muralla who volunteer countless hours working and interacting with the children at events and classes. Please view these three links to see our dream of creating a new, larger Social Inclusion Center. We plan to transform this derelict industrial building into a phenomenal climbing space with classrooms, dorms and gathering areas.

IF ANY CLIMBER KNOWS OF OR HAS ANY CONNECTIONS TO COMPANIES OR CHARITIES OR INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY BE WILLING TO HELP US IN ANY WAY, PLEASE CONTACT US.
WE WILL BE MOST GRATEFUL.
Please forward this letter to all the climbers you know…
We do believe that these are the very children who, in the future, will be changing the course of the lives of all people on the planet.
All one needs to do is spend even one minute in La Muralla’s Climbing Center on any given morning to feel the children’s incredible resiliency and power bursting forth from their young hearts and bouncing off the multicolored and multifaceted walls filled with a thousand handholds…
You are overwhelmed as that power fills the space to overflowing, ready to explode out into the city to change the world forever.
We will give an update in the near future to say how many shoes we have collected!
Sincerely and with much gratitude,
Michael J. Mullen, Co-founder and Vice President,
